For the most part when i am on holiday for a few weeks i just buy a prepay sim locally which saves on all the hassles of using my own sim card.

I was told by customer service at ATT Internation Plans that even if I purchased their International Roaming plan that I'd be charged $.99 cents a minute while the phone was on even if I was not making a call or receiving a call. Just turning the phone on would start the .99 a minute charges. That surely couldn't be true, COULD IT?
Thanks:

Thanks, Dirk. Yep, I've seen a lot of travelers with their iPhones, and I'm glad it works well for you -- it's certainly easier to check your email using your iPhone than it is to visit a net bar or carry a laptop! However, if someone wants to travel with their iPhone, I'd recommend that they get it cracked BEFORE leaving. Navigating cell phone tech lingo is difficult in a foreign language. I'm not an AT&T advocate, however, I'd warn people that cracked iPhones can be problematic (not ringing, losing contacts, etc), and I'm worried about it getting lost, stolen, or broken.

I picked up a used mobile phone in Thailand for under $15. It's cheap to call locally (about 2 cents per minute), and I only need to charge it about once every 5 days (!), which can be important while trekking away from civilization.

I've been using Skype on my laptop to call internationally... I've been on the phone for hours and so far I've spent less than $3, so if you're going to have an average reliable internet connection while traveling, Skype is a viable telephone alternative.

I use my unlocked iPhone all over the world. I just buy a local, cheap SIM card for a few bucks or Euros, and there you go! Even during my last trip in Chile it worked perfectly.
Ok, no data plan, but I use my WiFi connection then wherever I can.
Why would I support AT&T if there are way other means. I can highly recommend it.
